Weekly Reflection - Friday, March 5th

Why is there so much down time in the Studio?

Everyone agreed that this was a problem AND that there was a lot to do to complete the last show.

Having reflected on this, please honestly answer the question above.

I think there is too much down time in the class room because no one knows what to do really, aside from what you say needs to be filmed at the beginning of class, but even then you've got the same people who pounce on that opportunity every time before anyone else can get a chance to go film something outside of the class.

I think we need to have a big to do list, not just the line up, but a giant to do list like what we have with the big rule sheet that is hanging in the control room that was totally forgotten after the first day it went up. We need something like that so we can just put things up there that need to be done, so everyone really knows what is available to do, aside from the vague statement "There's always something to do."

I believe there is so much down time in the studio because some of us just get caught standing around talking and hanging out. but i also believe that it is becasue we don't know what to be doing and also some of us may be overwhelmed with the fact that so much has to be done and people get overwhelmed with that.

I know its been about 3 weeks but I still think everyone is still sort of getting a feel for what they want to do.
I just dont think that everyone is completely comfortable with just JUMPING RIGHT IN yet.
I feel like everyone moves and progresses and their own rates, but I feel like everyone can speak up a little more about getting things done. Not in an obnoxious way, but just an encouraging and informative way.

We should probably start making and in depth to do list so that not only do we have an outline of what needs to be done, but explained examples.

I just dont want the show to be as stressful as it was last show. I just want it to be chill and relaxed, so that on the last three days we can be enhancing our final product and not trying to COMPLETE it.

I think there is so much down time because everyone is getting caught up in filming something cool and not focusing on the show at hand, we should go ahead and edit as soon as we import so we won't have as many problems as last time so we can put it together and export it. I think if you film it we should import and edit just a little to help the editor out also.

It seems as if no one wants to do anything but just hang out and chill not worry about filming or anything i felt as if keith had to do everything last show. We are a family and need to split the time up into different ways.

I also agree with paige and brobb we should make a to do list and split everything up evenly into different days so we can all work on something, and if you don't have anything to do ask someone who is busy if they need anything, and help them if they do. its just ridiclous how much time has been wasted

I think the main reason that there is so much down time in the studio is because of procastination. Why do it today when you can do it 2 weeks from now right? The way I always look at it, if you do your work first, you don't have to worry aboout it later. So you have that much more free time and a lot less worrying in the end. I think a lot of people get stuck in the mindset of "oh if I can just make it to 3:00 when we're setting up for live daily, then I won't have to do anything for the day. It's easier to pretend to be busy for 1hr than it is for 1.5hrs. Yeah this is an issue because our first show was very rushed and if you looked closely enough, you can see that. I want our 2nd show to go way above and beyond what we did on our first show and to do that, we need to stick to our list. If you don't have anything to do.. look at the list. Find something to do, ask L, ask somebody else. If you film something, it would REALLY help if you import the footage yourself, properly name it and edit all the "dumb" footage out of it. (meaning the accidental filming) Leave only the good bits in. The editing doesn't have to be perfect but say if you have 3mins of good footage in 10mins of filming, atleast edit the segment so that the 3 good minutes are showing. It's up to the editor to choose what part of the 3 good minutes he wants to use in the show. Also, if you film it and aren't sure about editing/importing, have somebody else help you. That way you are both working. I know we will have downtime in here but I just think we should get all our work done before we have the downtime.

Well when I took charge of planning the show I assigned everyone to a specific job on specific days, therefore everyone knew what they had to do and when. This show was not planned like that so no one knows what they're supposed to do. It's more or less a "let's do whatever someone tells me to do" situation.

I feel that since I pretty much let Keith down as far as editing the last show, I've been giving my best effort to always be doing something productive. This week I've been doing announcements. The first day I did this, I took up all my time doing this. I was shocked but then I realized that we had had a long class discussion at the beginning.

I don't really know why people have down time. Maybe it is what Paige M says that some people just don't know what to say.

Frankly, I feel like I can't say anything because of the way people have supposedly been perceiving me lately. I've heard that I've been acting like blah and like blah. I feel that if I say any little thing it's going to be taken as a slam on any one person. And someone may think this blog is about starting drama or whatever. It's not.

Anyways back to "down time." I think it's also each person's choice. They know they have PLENTY to be doing. They might just be repressing the memory of the last show's cram sessions. But truthfully, I have seen most people working.

I think the daily show is going fine. This past week has been the same and yeah theres been too much down. I dont have a solution for it... More work should go into the next show because i dont want to wait till the last min. to do our show like last time and we got the pledge filmed. The procrastination level I think has gotten a little better because a little bit of our footage is filmed and we still have 3 weeks left.

I know that we have been in this class for a good while now but I think there is so much down time in the studio because we still aren't comfortable with are positions and just don't know what to do. Also we get caught up in hanging out and procrastination would be another thing keeping us from getting stuff done. I also think we just need to plan out what needs to be done at the beginning of class to know what we are going to be doing and get it done.

I think the reason we've had so much down time is because

a) we're still getting used to the 'atmosphere' of the whole show stuff

b) maybe we don't know what needs to be done for the show/live daily/etc.

c)... gah, there's always supposed to be a reason 'c,' and i honestly can't think of one...

Basically, communication. 'nuff said.

We as a class have lots of down time and I would have to say that, that would be because we are still getting used to the class, and we are all still trying to get the feel of what our jobs are and what we are supposed to do. I think that we need to sit down and plan out further instructions on what each and every persons job is in the show, like we did last time, that way their is no pointing fingers if something doesn't go as planned.

I do agree that this is a problem because when everyone is just standing around trying to figure out what to do, it takes away time and makes the quality of the show less than it could be. Just think of how our show could be, we have more time to work on the show than last time, and our show was really good. We could be the best Ram TV staff if we just got focused and planned and made everything work out on time and then we could have fun after the show is done. This will also take the burden off the person doing the editing. If we all get done with each part of the show early, we can help out the editor, and I'm sure Magena will be happy with that because she is the editor for this show.

Overall I am really happy with the Ram TV Staff and I think that everyone is doing great but that is just the one thing we need to work on.
